HART Biologicals is continuing to invest in scientific talent for the future by providing summer placements for two university students.
John Boyd and Lucy Appleby will work in the company’s research and development laboratories before returning to their studies in September.
John, who is 23 and from Hartlepool, is in the final year of his BSc in Biological Sciences at Teesside University, while 20-year-old Lucy is about to start her final year at Northumbria University, where she is studying for a BSc in Biomedical Science.
John, a keen rugby player, is working for a second summer at Hart Biologicals and has been assigned a series of special projects to further enhance the company’s own brand reagents which are used in the monitoring of anti-platelet drugs.
He said: “It’s really worthwhile to be working on a summer internship because it helps me build on the knowledge I have developed in university, but see that applied in a hands-on environment.
“I enjoy every minute of it and the team here is very supportive and knowledgeable.”
Lucy, from Murton in County Durham, is on her first summer placement at Hart Biologicals where she is working on research and development of new products and techniques.
She said: “My degree is all about biomedical procedures so I have particularly enjoyed working with the blood samples and carrying out various tests.
“It’s been very useful to see the theory from university put into practice in a working laboratory.”
As well as the summer interns, Hart Biologicals also has three apprentice technicians who work at the business while completing qualifications at local colleges.
Alby Pattison, Managing Director of Hart Biologicals, said: “It is really important for young people to get good quality work experience particularly in an area of study they are interested in.
“As a company, we have always believed in providing young people with opportunities in their chosen career path that not only enhances their CV and prospects but helps us too. Often we put the students on special projects that they can develop in their time here and help us to enhance and improve the range of products and services we provide.”
